Racing The Kid

Dear Journal,

Well you know me pretty well … that even though I don’t “seem” competitive … I really am.

Okay, so this weekend I went jogging as usual. I’m slowly getting better at it … I can jog half a mile in about 4 minutes. Which I know isn’t the best time, but I’m improving.

Let me tell you, when I first started I could barely even run a lap, now I can do 2 without stopping. My goal is to run one mile.

Anyways, so I was in lane 2 … just minding my own business when I hear someone next to me. They’re breathing hard and I’m thinking, “Who’s this guy beside me and why is he jogging at the same pace I am?”

So both of us continue on ….

I get curious because I wanted to see who this guy was … I look to the left at the corner of my eye. To my surprise it’s some kid, probably around 10 or 11. I was pretty impressed that he was keeping up with me.

We’re slowly reaching the end of our first lap and starting our second. He is still jogging right next to me .. never going faster or slower. In my mind I’m thinking, “You know what? I’m not going to let this kid win”.

I suddenly turn my casual jogging into a competition with this kid, basically to see who’s going to tire out first. We’re both halfway in our second lap when my legs start to burn and my breathing become irregular.

Still he keeps up … his breathing even harder now. We finish our second lap and by this time my heart is beating faster than I can type, my legs feel like fire ants are all over them, and I’m ready to pass out.

The kid is still jogging and I wasn’t going to let some 10 year old punk win … so I continue, pushing myself to my limit. We’re two and a half laps in when he finally stops.

“Hellllz yeah! That’s how you do it buddy”, as I gloated in my mind. I ran for a couple more seconds just to feel the glory of passing him and winning.

Afterwards I finally stop to rest feeling accomplished for beating a 10 year old kid in a imaginary race I had in my mind. As I was walking and feeling great … I hear someone breathing hard behind me.

As I look to the corner of my eye, it was that kid passing me as he continued jogging. He was probably thinking, “Helllz yeah … I beat that 20 something, eat dust loser!”.

I was disheartened and flipped him off in my mind, not that I would actually do it, haha. Stupid kid .. couldn’t he just give me that one brief moment of joy?
