Umm, Ms. Physical Therapist .. Do Your Therapy

I’ve been jogging after work and on weekends these past couple of weeks. It’s relaxing for me and I’m trying to stay healthy since I sit in a cubicle literally all day and I mean … all … day.

Anyways, last week when I was starting to jog, my right knee began to hurt. Nothing too big … but there was enough pain to feel it.

I didn’t really think about it until I was going down the stairs of my apartment, slowly hobbling and limping.

Instead of resting the next day .. I went jogging again; which made it worse. I thought it would have passed and healed .. guess I was mistaken.

My co-worker told me to ask my sister, since she’s going to get her Master’s in Physical Therapy. I didn’t even think about that … a therapist right in my family.

She’ll be starting Grad School next month (oh my goodness … there’s ALREADY drama and she hasn’t moved in with her other 4 roommates).

Anyways, so I call her up and tell her about the knee problem. Ummmm … her reply wasn’t what I wanted to hear.

Me: Hey .. you know how I’ve been jogging these days.

Sister: Yeah, why?

Me: Well, starting last week my knee started to hurt. The thing is it didn’t when I first started out.

Sister: Well maybe it’s because you’re not use to it yet.

Me: Do you think it’s because I’m placing too much strain on it by jogging outdoors instead of a treadmill? It’s only my right knee though.

Sister: It could also be your shoes, and if you walk oddly. What shoes are you using?

Me: These running shoes I bought

Sister: Well I’m not really sure, I guess just walk these days and let it rest. If it really hurts put an ice pack on it.

Me: Oh okay .. well it doesn’t hurt that bad, but okay.

Well I know she doesn’t know EVERYTHING yet, but thought she dealt with something similar to my situation. So now I’ve been walking and taking it slow.

I tried searching for people with similar problems, but couldn’t find any useful information. Anyone with tips, please feel free to comment.

    Your sister sounds like she knows what she’s talking about. Even if you feel it’s still not serious enough for ice – do it anyway. Icing once a day it will feel much better. Also, rest it – give it time to bounce back. Also, check the arch in your shoes – if you have a high arch and not enough arch support in your shoes that could be causing some pain. I hope this helps! Keep up the good work!

    Hey .. thanks for the help.

    Never really thought about if I had high arch’s. Probably should check now since I’ve never really done so.

    I’ve been resting these past days and taking it slow, I’m hoping it heals soon so I can start again.

    I agree with your sister, put some ice on it. You would be best to avoid running for now, but yeah you should walk around so that the stiffness doesn’t set in. You may have torn a muscle or something.

    I’ve been doing just that … avoid running, haha.

    It’s getting better, I’m not limping as much when I go on stairs, haha.

    If it feels like it’s 100% better, you should still wait a few days before attempting to run again. And when you do decide to run, do some careful stretching if you don’t already.

    Okay, I’m done giving advice. Lol.
